Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM)
As the sponsor of the Center the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine is a prestigious university in China. Founded in 1956, the university is one of the earliest established institutions of higher learning of Chinese medicine approved by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China. In 1960, it was acknowledged as a national key university by the central government. In 1996, it became the key construction university of the national "211 project". In 2011, it is included in the construction university of the national "985" engineering with the advantage discipline innovation platform.
In the long-term school running practice, BUCM adheres to the university motto “Qin Qiu Bo Cai, Hou De Ji Sheng” (Study Diligently, Make Use of the Strengths of All Others; Value Virtue and Benefit the Society by Practicing Medicine). It advocates “learning-oriented”, “absolute perfection”, “making a conspicuous characteristics ” and “strengthening advantages ”. With distinctive characteristics and great strengths, the university has become a teaching base for the cultivation of high-level innovative TCM professionals, a model base for the reform of TCM education, a research base for the innovation in TCM knowledge and technology, a health care base for the prevention and management of critical conditions and complex and miscellaneous cases, a humanity base for the dissemination of Chinese excellent traditional culture, and an international exchange base for the introduction of TCM to the world. It has become a world-renowned TCM university performing functions of teaching, research and medical care services, making great contributions to the development of health care and civilization of the mankind. It is under the direct leadership of the Chinese Ministry of Education and jointly established by the National Health and Family Planning Commission (the former Ministry of Public Health), State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SATCM) and the municipal government of Beijing.
The university consists of the following schools: School of Preclinical Medicine, School of Chinese Materia Medica, School of Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, School of Management, School of Nursing, School of Humanities, Marxism School, Graduate School, International School, School of Continuing Education, School of Distance Education, Faculty of TCM for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Students, and School of Chinese Culture Studies, the First Clinical School, Second Clinical School, Third Clinical School and Fourth Clinical School. Currently it offers 11 bachelor’s degree programs across a wide range of subjects, including Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese Materia Medica, Chinese Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, Acupuncture, Moxibustion and Tuina, Public Health Management, Business Management, Information Management and Information System, Nursing, English (Medical Science) and Law (Medicine and Health). It provides quality education to cultivate professionals that meet the challenges in the future.
BUCM has four affiliated hospitals, namely Dongzhimen Hospital, Dongfang Hospital, the 3rd Affiliated Hospital and Zaozhuang Hospital. It also has 15 key clinical departments of national level, and 35 key departments accredited by the State Administration of TCM. It has established 42 offices for inheritance and development of the accomplishments of various TCM academic schools and famed TCM doctors as part of the Coordinated Project for Preservation of Academic Achievements of Celebrated Senior TCM experts. Since its founding, it is the first TCM universities to admit international students. By now, it has trained over 20,000 TCM professionals from 90 countries and regions, and formed collaborations with 108 prestigious universities and research institutions from 30 countries and regions.
